When Self-Doubt Knocks You Off Balance: The Power of the Pause

Last week, I had a series of experiences that knocked my confidence completely off-balance. One challenge, I could have handled. Two? Manageable. But three events in a single day left me questioning everything.

Here's what I know is true: growth often feels uncomfortable, and these moments of self-doubt can be powerful teachers—if we let them.

So what did I do? I paused.

The Gift of Permission to Process

I held space for the noticing and the emotion. After that difficult day, I closed my computer and walked away—knowing I needed to give myself permission to process everything coming up.

The next day, still deep in doubt, I cancelled a networking call with an honest email: "I'm a little off balance and won't be able to show up fully for our connection call—let's reschedule."

Clear is kind, friends.

Then I took a look at my work and asked myself three crucial questions:

  • Do I believe in this work?

  • Am I delivering on this promise?

  • Does this work matter?

I let the questions sit for a few days. The answers revealed themselves:

Yes, it matters.
Yes, I believe in the work.

Both things were true. AND I was still learning, still growing.

The Wisdom of Not Reacting

When I talked it over with my COO later that week, she said something powerful: "You took the time you needed to feel the feelings and process. By the end of the week, you stabilized and found your footing."

She also named another outcome—only half-jokingly: "Also, you didn't decide to build something new."

In other words, I didn't react. I didn't give into the temptation to take action just because I was uncomfortable. I paused instead of falling into action bias.

What the Pause Makes Possible

With this pause, I gave myself the gift of perspective. And with that gift, I found not only renewed commitment to my work, but also the capacity to integrate the lessons from the experiences that had left me questioning.

This is exactly why I teach what I teach—so others can do the same. So they can hold feedback alongside their own inner knowing. So they can trust themselves enough to pause, reflect, and move forward with clarity and courage.

Your Invitation

Here's what I'm carrying forward: Sometimes the bravest thing we can do is sit with our discomfort, pause before we act, and trust that our inner wisdom will lead the way.

Reflection questions for you:

  • When was the last time you gave yourself permission to pause and process?

  • What became possible because you did?

  • Where in your life right now could a pause serve you?

The next time self-doubt knocks you off balance, remember: the pause is where your power lives. Between the trigger and your response. Between the fear-based story and the aligned action.

Trust yourself enough to take it.
